The Benefits of Foot Reflexology and Other Types of Foot Care

!±8± The Benefits of Foot Reflexology and Other Types of Foot Care

Alternative medicine has taken many aspects of United States culture by storm. It is not uncommon now to see elements of alternative medicine combined with that of traditional Western medicine. There are also now hundreds of medical practices which house not only traditional doctors such as family practice doctors and obstetrics and gynecologists as well as massage therapists and naturalists.

It is a new age for medication and even patients who used to be very straight and narrow as far as medicine goes are now trying out new things. It is not at all uncommon to now see patients who are treating an illness with both anti-biotic and acupuncture to help alleviate any pain associated with their conditions. One of the common supplementary alternative medicine procedures that are commonly used is foot reflexology.

Foot reflexology, which is also referred to as zone therapy, is an alternative medicine method that involves massaging or applying pressure to part of the feet, and sometimes the hands and ears, in order to help benefit other areas of the body or to help improve over all health.

It is often incorporated into routine massage therapy as well. Reflexology is said to help relieve tension, improve circulation and help promote the natural function of other areas in the body. The use of certain tools, cremes and lotions are often incorporated into reflexology.

How Reflexology Originated

The earliest forms of reflexology are believed to have originated in China dating back as much as 5,000 years ago. This is not surprising as many, many forms of alternative medicine are Chinese in origin. The early Taoists were responsible for originating many Chinese health practices such as reflexology. But the practice has been detected in various forms on four continents. Those continents are Asia, Europe, Africa and North America.

There is much debate, as there is with any alternative medicine procedure, about the particular efficacy of reflexology. But many people swear to its benefits. It is probably best not to rely on something like reflexology to cure you of a disease. It is very important to always see a medical doctor for a serious condition. But you may personally find a benefit from reflexology that can help in combination with treatment from a medical doctor. It is also a very soothing form of massage.
